“How to Turn Data into Meaningful Information for Business Problems:
Strategy, Practice and Games for Start Ups and Status Quos”

Health Data Initiative Forum III – The Health Datapalooza

Washington Convention Center, Washington DC
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Institute of Medicine

We were asked by our fine friends at the HHS/CMS and IOM to put together an “expert” session on data & analytics, and boy, oh boy, did we put on a show.

An amazing panel of absolute experts from across the entire industry (see list below) a charged up audience packed standing room only, playing games like Mad Libs and Speed Dating, eating cotton candy, dodging Cracker Jack’s whizzing by, all in huge foam cowboy hats, while electronic dance music pounded away… you know, your typical healthcare event.

Everyone had a blast, and even learned something along the way.  Even the Powers-that-Be were warmed over:

“They put on a graduate level seminar that had crowds coming up to us saying this was the best session of lives.”
Todd Park, United States Chief Technology Officer

Of course, it wasn’t all fun and games.  The session was focused on the one thing necessary to make the New Profit Paradigm click, and something we’ve not done too well as an industry and, as evidenced by the failure rates of start-ups coming into the space, still have a tremendous amount of work to do: take data and turn it into meaningful information that solves real business problems and creates value.

Great to see you if you were there.  If not, maybe take a look at the goings on below – it was a show indeed.

Session Information:

“How to Turn Data into Meaningful Information for Business Problems:
Strategy, Practice and Games for Start Ups and Status Quos”

When it comes to turning data into meaningful information and creating a product, service or company around it, strategy and practice go hand in hand. This session will function as both a strategic overview and a practical deep dive, focusing on monetizing data for both folks starting out and those who have been around the block. To build something that uses data to solve meaningful business questions, you need to identify a place where there is a market need and a business framework for transforming that data into meaningful information. Once you have a handle on both the market and the data, you need to practice. The first part of this breakout will focus on the strategy around creating an analytic product/service/company with particular attention to the oddities in health care. The second part will be more of a show and tell featuring some examples particular to structuring the CMS data around business questions. The third part will include a series of structured games focused on monetizing CMS data—sort of a speed-dating version of a hack-a-thon.
